One Year Olds Don't Need a Lot of Toys
Remember that one year olds move quickly from toy to toy and have short attention spans. This means a handful of toys is usually enough for most infants. Parents can choose carefully and purchase several high-quality toys instead of scads of cheap plastic that won't hold up to an infant or toddler's explorations.
One Year Olds Develop Rapidly Through the Next Year
Over the course of the next year your baby will learn to walk, if he isn't already, begin talking and if anything like my children, climbing, jumping and destroying. Think about purchasing toys that will grow with your children. Multi-use toys that cover a variety of developmental stages will give you the best value for your money when purchasing birthday presents.
Purchase Both Fun and Educational Toys
I like to purchase toys that are both fun and educational for my children's birthday parties. Why only challenge their hand-eye coordination if we can also challenge their brains? Board books, shape sorters, wooden blocks, simple counting toys and other educationally-minded toys.
I love shape sorters that have colored blocks too so we can practice shapes, counting and colors. Wooden blocks are a huge favorite at our house also. It seems cliché to get alphabet blocks but those are another great multi-tasking educational gift that little kids love.
Consider the Need for Batteries When Choosing Birthday Presents
I hate battery powered gadgets. They make constant and irritating noises and then they make slow and painful dying noises and then they cost additional money to keep working. I much prefer non-battery operated toys that my children can supply the energy for!
If you choose to give a battery-powered toy for a child's first birthday party gift, be sure to pick up a pack of batteries in the appropriate size to give as well!
List of Toys for a First Birthday Party
Here's a list of my favorite toys for my infants and toddlers:
- Wooden blocks (Be sure to check the source of the paint or buy unpainted blocks.)
- Shape sorters (Lamaze makes a fabulous soft sorter that is colorful and multisensory.)
- Walker/Rider - I love the little "I can climb on it by myself" riders. We've had a rocking Tigger, an elephant and a horse over the years and my kids love them.
- Foam Puzzles - Large colorful puzzle pieces are always a hit.
- Cars or Other Vehicles - Large, chunky cars and airplanes are always a hit - anything with wheels it seems.
Be sure to check safety labels and ensure that the toys you purchase are age appropriate. Watch out for small parts, small pieces, or detachable wheels, ribbons or strings that can present choking hazards.
